Thoughtful Design for a 1970s Ranch Renovation

As we kick off the new year and settle into January, we’re thrilled to feature a truly meaningful renovation project that beautifully reflects where design and life intersect. This couple came to us ready to downsize from their two-story family home into a more manageable ranch, one that would support aging in place while still feeling timeless and tailored. The home hadn’t been updated since it was built in the 1970s, which offered a unique opportunity: a blank slate for thoughtful design that prioritizes comfort, flow, and everyday functionality. We carefully evaluated the existing layout, touched every space in the house, and reconfigured key areas to create a ranch that feels modern, warm, and perfectly suited to how this couple now lives.

The kitchen quickly became the focal point of this renovation and set the tone for the entire home. Originally, the space functioned as a kitchen with a very small eating area, with the basement stairs running along the side of that eating space, limiting both functionality and flexibility in the layout. During the design phase, we carefully evaluated how the kitchen was being used and reimagined the circulation and flow, allowing us to create a more spacious, functional kitchen with a well-proportioned island that better supports everyday living and entertaining.

The cabinetry palette reflects the couple’s desire for warmth, comfort, and longevity as they downsize and plan to age in place. Warm canvas-colored perimeter cabinets create a soft, inviting backdrop, while the white oak island adds natural texture and subtle contrast. This combination aligns with the growing shift toward warmer palettes and softer modern lines, design choices that feels welcoming the moment you walk in and will stand the test of time.

Designed to serve double duty, this hall bath functions both as a powder room for guests and a highly practical everyday bathroom. Because this home is a ranch, thoughtful planning was essential to ensure ease of use and comfort. Clean lines, durable materials, and a straightforward layout give the space a modern yet timeless feel, creating a bathroom that is both functional and inviting. The result is a well balanced space that feels intentional rather than overdesigned and integrates seamlessly into the flow of the home.

The primary bathroom was fully remodeled as part of this phase of the renovation, transforming an outdated space into a calm, functional retreat that supports both daily routines and long-term living. While the homeowners are currently working with our team on a future primary suite addition, this renovated primary bathroom was designed to enhance comfort and functionality for everyday living now. The update addressed a previously undersized shower and inefficient storage, while refreshed finishes create a calm, cohesive space that complements the rest of the home.

One of the most transformative, but often overlooked, updates in this renovation was the complete replacement of doors, trim, and door hardware throughout the house. These details quietly elevate every room, creating consistency and polish from space to space. In a home originally built in the 1960s, these updates were essential in turning a true blank slate into a cohesive, modern ranch tailored for today’s living.
